Castleton has been working as a specialist signage sub-contractor for Cameron Black since 2002. During this time we have implemented a wide range of sign and graphics applications, varying in size, complexity and specification. A recent interesting project was 'Circus' in Covent Garden. Designed by iconic British designer Tom Dixon, Circus is an entertainment spectacle, combining restaurant and bar with cabaret style acts, in a surrealist inspired setting. Integral to the interior design is a 3 dimensional version of the logo, built from multiple layers of acrylic, set into a wall and back illuminated. Castleton was involved at an early stage, consulting and advising Cameron Black and the designers to ensure the inspired signage concept became reality. We recommended amendments to the proposed structure and identified a solution for illuminating it; LED light sheet. High brightness LEDs were strategically embedded within an acrylic light guide pad to create a panel of evenly distributed light. In this instance RGB tri colour LEDs were embedded to create a fully programmable colour changing panel. The light sheet was then mounted behind the different layers of translucent acrylic in order to face illuminate the lettering.
By utilising light sheet technology, Castleton delivered a highly successful, cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution to a challenging creative concept. With low running costs (light sheet consumes 70% less power than a fluorescent lamp), long life (16 years at 12 hours per day) and sound environmental credentials (lightsheet contains no harmful mercury or other heavy metals) - the client was delighted with the outcome. Castleton's efficiency and expertise in dealing with the signage allowed Cameron Black to concentrate their efforts on other elements of the contract, ensuring handover in time for the high profile media launch.
