Castleton and the Royal College of Music

Signage in the Major Scale

Founded in 1882, the Royal College of Music enjoys a reputation as one of the world's leading conservatoires.   Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth is its patron.

The Services:

Following their appointment to review and redesign the wayfinding system for the college, designers Air Design invited Castleton to tender.   The brief was to produce a contemporary signage scheme that reflected the ambience of the college.   The initial concept was a high specification solution which, based on the large volume of signs required, would prove to exceed the budget.   Castleton were asked to come up with an alternative and so we devised a way of manufacturing the signage that retained the look and feel of the original design ideas, but at a fraction of the cost.   More than 300 signs were successfully installed during working hours. Comprehensive risk assessments were completed to ensure the health and safety of staff and students and an operations and maintenance manual supplied.

The Benefits

The new wayfinding system plays a vital role in the branding of the college with the graphic elements creating a physical manifestation of the College's identity.   Castleton's innovative use of materials and techniques has resulted in a cost effective signage scheme with a contemporary edge.
